I’m running a marathon in support of childhood cancer research,

a cause that is deeply personal to me.

I will be running my first full marathon along the banks of the beautiful Brisbane river on Sunday, 29 November. I am doing this with the goal of raising $20,000 for childhood cancer, and specifically, the Zero Childhood Cancer Program.

Over 1000 children are diagnosed with cancers in Australia each year. Childhood cancer research is a cause that is deeply personal to me because I passionately believe that knowledge is the key to prevention in the long term. Research will ultimately make the most difference to outcomes in the long term, and has already made valuable inroads.

Nearly four years ago, my niece was diagnosed with childhood cancer. I have witnessed her fight from afar, and seen what she has had to endure over these past years. Her resilience and strength is awe inspiring, as is the strength of character shown by her Mum and Dad, and our entire extended family.

Our family has rallied to support each other throughout this time, and we are a stronger unit as a result. However, I have long felt great frustration about not being able to do more in a practical sense during a time of crisis. I know that I’m not the only one. Everyone wants to do something, anything, to help. At the end of the day however, we can’t do more than offer moral support and be present, and show them that we care about what they are going through.

Running a marathon in 2020 in support of childhood cancer research is my way of showing solidarity with my amazing niece, and celebrating her strength and the strength of our family.

It is my hope that funds raised will, in some small way, help in the broader fight against childhood cancer, and demonstrate tangible results in the future.

For me, this is a goal well worth supporting if it positively impacts other children and their families who are going through similar ordeals.

Children like Jack are here today because of the Zero Childhood Cancer Program.

When all is said and done, running a marathon is nothing when compared to what my niece, and indeed thousands of other children diagnosed with this cruel disease presently endure. Their strength and resilience, and that of their families will be the one thing that ensures that I reach the finish line.

With your support, we can help as many children as possible have access to Zero Childhood Cancer Program.

Thank you,
